The British navigator Matthew Flinders passed away on this day in 1814.
Matthew Flinders confirmed what earlier navigators have partly mapped and predicted: that Australia was a single continent land mass.
Flinders’s book A Voyage to Terra Australis compiled the results of his explorations around the Australian continent and his accounts as a prisoner in Mauritius after trying to head back to England.
