First Nations

In this week’s Anangu Lands Paper Tracker radio program, we find out about the Northern Territory Aboriginal Justice Agreement.

This Agreement is between the Northern Territory Government and Aboriginal communities, organisations and leaders. The aim of the Agreement is to improve justice outcomes for people and increase the involvement of First Nations’ leaders in shaping the ways in which First Nation peoples experience the justice system.

It is hoped that this Agreement will result in fewer people going to prison in the first place and fewer people re-offending and being sent back to prison.

The Agreement includes a model that will provide options for leadership to become involved in the local court systems and in making decisions. The model includes diversion programs – or alternatives to people going to prison – and arrangements for rehabilitation and support for family members and others who are affected by the justice system and its processes.
