Review: Peter Helliar – Big Boys Pants
Posted on: Mon 19 Feb 2018
Hi, I’m Julie Cavanagh and I’ve been to see Peter Helliar in his Fringe show Big Boy Pants.
You may have seen him in his role on a certain current affairs program but his real love is stand up comedy and at this he excels.
This is his 16th Fringe, so he has it down pat as far as pleasing the audience goes and the majority there tonight were definitely fans. The sellout show unfortunately was 15 minutes late starting, unusual for Fringe, but hopefully it was just teething troubles.
Helliar equates the wearing of ‘big boy pants’ with responsibility which, in his case, is by having a vasectomy. At least, that’s how it starts…
He segued smoothly from vasectomy to credit cards to politics and back again, with ease, throwing out random thoughts to the delight of the audience. Unlike a lot of comics these days, his performance was not egocentric, but identified with everyday life and was all the funnier for it.
There is some coarse language, so this may not be the show to take your kids to, but if you want an hour of perceptive, non-stop comedy, don’t miss it.
Peter Helliar is appearing at the Vagabond in the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Check your Fringe guide for details.
