Endangered Species Spike Doesn’t Mean Recovery

Posted on: Tue 17 Oct 2017

More sightings of endangered species surely mean there are increasing numbers right? Wrong, according to Professor David Lindenmayer increased sightings aren’t always a reliable measure of their viability.

On the basis of an increase in sightings of Leadbeater’s possums, advocates for the Victorian native forest logging industry have proposed to downgrade the possum’s conservation status from critically endangered. This could pose a major threat to the survival of the species.

He spoke with Casey and Sam about what this means for endangered animals going forward.
