Police Firearms Carriage in Australia

Posted on: Wed 6 Sep 2017

Across Australia, all police officers are routinely armed when they are on duty…but is this right?

Professor Rick Sarre from the University of South Australia says we have to accept the fact that firearms are with us now and now we have to ensure that our policy imperatives are safer.

Differing approaches to police firearm use are adopted by countries across Europe and North America.

The debate has unfortunately been brought back into the limelight due recent fatal police shootings country NSW and Sydney’s Central Station.

Are they safer if they are armed?

Are we safer if police are armed?

Are police safer in relation to their firearm being turned on?

Professor Rick Sarre from the University of South Australia joins Breakfast’s Jennie and Ian to share his perspective on some these issues.

Professor Sarre will be speaking at the University of South Australia’s Law evenings seminar on Wednesday the 13th of September from 5:30pm. If you’re interested in attending, click here
