Program description
Are you after a way to unwind and expand your musical world this weekend?
On Saturday afternoons, Radio Adelaide invites you on a musical mystery tour off the mainstream highway with music you won’t hear on radio everyday. Chill out for a while with some rhythms that are Out of this World, made by musicians from around the globe.
History of Out of This World (OOTW)
Just before the start of WW2 two astronomical scientists in the the USA pointed a giant ear towards the Heavens. Lo and behold in 1962, 10th March to be exact, a signal appeared on the siesmographic readout. Most scientists ignored the "glitch", but many years later OOTW engineers calculated, using wave mechanics as a guide, that the signal came from Earth, bounced off an asteroid and was picked up by the giant ear stationed in North East USA
On further analysis OOTW techs worked out that the signal left Earth in 1954 and what was picked up was, in fact, music heavily laden with bass and drums from an AM radio station in Mid West USA, operating at a huge wattage. Rock and Roll had hit the Stars 4 light years away and returned safely to Earth. That's right - an 8 year round trip.
OOTW geeks finished their calculations in May 1998 and launched the radio programme "Out of This World" to commemorate the great work done by all scientists, musicians, broadcasters and anyone else who reckon that they had something to do with the discovery!
