John Mack: WW2 Australian Army Education Svc

Posted on: Mon 1 Aug 2022

1932 and the Great Depression.  16yo camera and film enthusiast John Mack (full name Cyril John Mack) left Norwood High School.

1942.  While our main Battalions were fighting in the Middle East, the Japanese had bombed Darwin, and John Mack was one of our many servicemen hurriedly sent up to the Northern Territory.  His Unit?  The Australian Army Education Service.  From their headquarters at Adelaide River, John’s area of operations ranged over to the Tiwi Islands, across to Darwin, Wyndam and Broome.  John Mack talks about his fascinating experiences to local Historian John Mannion, who has given Service Voices special permission to broadcast it.
