In 1901, the very first Nobel prize was awarded. The prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and, of course, the coveted peace prize were endowed by the estate of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist.
In 1996, Nelson Mandela signed a new South African Constitution, a fundamental part of the negotiations to end apartheid in South Africa.
In 1967, King of Soul, Otis Redding, was killed when his tour plane crashed into Lake Monona in Wisconsin at age 26.
