The Federal Government’s claim that it will meet and beat its 2030 target is largely based on emissions reduction from land use change – that is – land that supposedly would have been cleared, but is now not going to be. However a study in Queensland has shown that the monitoring of land clearing done by the Government has in many cases incorrectly identified cleared land as forested – and the results suggest that this emissions reduction claim is based on false or incorrect data. This extraordinary finding is explained by Dr Martin Taylor from the University of Queensland, who spoke to Barry Mitchell.
