Australia’s Coal-Reliant Future

We’re fast approaching Cop26, the most significant climate change meeting since the Paris agreement in 2015, while Australia is still in debates over net zero emissions targets.

There are still aspects of the government that are staunchly fighting to maintain the coal trade to ensure our economic future, however in the current climate the world looks to be shifting away from coal.

So, what is in Australia’s future if we continue to bet on coal and its international trade?

Christian Downie is an Associate Professor in the School of Regulation and Global Governance at the Australian National University speaks with Breakfast’s Tom Mann about Australia’s reluctance to abandon coal-fired energy.
