An ode (and guide) to bush toileting

Posted on: Wed 30 Jun 2021

Ah, going to the toilet outdoors. It can be as stressful and messy as it can be psychologically fuelling.

Much like setting up camp, making a fire, and cooking in the outdoors, going to the toilet in the outdoors is a skill we need to acquire. Travelling Life called in helpline Dr. Kate Grarock, ecologist, Indiana Jones-like explorer, passionate overnight hiker, and YouTuber to learn all about how to become good at it.

What are the biggest no-no’s? What tools are handy to put in your backpack? What’s the best technique? How do we avoid damaging our sensitive Australian soils? And maybe most of all: how can we learn to enjoy doing our business out in the wilderness?

Find our chat below. It starts off with a compilation that brings an ode to the most beautiful bush toilet experiences people have had.
