On this day in history:

The first transmission of CNN, the Cable News Network in 1980.

It was the world’s first 24-hour news network. Their first lead story reported the attempted assassination of civil rights leader Vernon Jordan.

Founder Ted Turner begun the program out of spite, because industry professionals told him it could not be done. They currently employ 3,000 employees worldwide.

Today would be Marilyn Monroe’s 55th birthday, if she was still alive.

She died at 36 years old in 1962.

Also, on this day in 1495 was the first written record of scotch whisky.

In order to classify as ‘scotch whisky’, it must be left for a minimum of three years to age in casks in Scotland.
