“Sun Tax” for Solar Panel Owners

Posted on: Fri 9 Apr 2021

Among a raft of proposed changes, the Australian Energy Market Commission has recommended what’s been labelled as a “sun tax” that could see an estimated 2.7 million Australian households with solar panels being charged to export their excess energy back into the grid.

There has been backlash from solar panel owners after investing in panels thanks to government incentives and promises of reduced energy bills.

Director of the Victoria Energy Policy Centre at Victoria University, Professor Bruce Mountain joins Breakfast’s Tom Mann and Paul Davies to discuss the implications of this proposal.
