On This Day – February 16

Posted on: Tue 16 Feb 2021

On this day in history;

God bless you was officially announced the correct response to a sneeze in the year 600 by Pope Gregory the Great. The Radio Adelaide Breakfast team were today years old when they decided ‘and you’ is the correct response to ‘bless you’, rather than the one-sided response ‘thankyou’.

The first publication of Thomas Gray’s poem ‘Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard’ was released in 1751 on this day. The poem uses outdated language which is difficult to understand by the average reader in 2021.

On this day in music history, The Beatles topped British rock charts with ‘Please, Please Me’. The song was not successful in the United States, but perhaps the Brit’s love for ‘pleasing’ made it go off with a bang.
