On this day in history;

In 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al Qaeda hijacked four aeroplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States.

In 1951, Florence Chadwick became the first woman to swim the English Channel from England to France. It took her 16 hours and 19 minutes.

In 1978, Australian musician Ben Lee was born in Sydney.
