Funding clean energy technology research

Posted on: Sun 2 Feb 2020

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency – ARENA – was established in 2011 under the Gillard government, as part of a package that included the introduction of the carbon price, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, and the Climate Change Authority.

It has served as the primary funder of Australia’s clean energy technology research. However, its new project funding is set to expire around mid-2020.

The Australia Institute has produced ‘Fighting for the ARENA’, a report calling for further funding for ARENA.

To discuss the scenarios for future of ARENA, Barometer’s Des Lawrence spoke to Dan Cass, Energy Policy and Regulatory Lead at The Australia Institute.
