Aussie comedy covers political issues

Posted on: Sun 17 Nov 2019

State Theatre Company’s latest production Black is the New White is a “trojan horse of a play”.

Artistic director Mitchell Butel says the Aussie Christmas family dinner comedy, starring Miranda Tapsell, also has “all these political issues and debates about identity politics and wealth and privilege and love”.

“We should all be questioning our privilege all the time, whether we’re black or white, rich or poor,” he tells presenter Tara Nash.

“We all need to take stock of that stuff, but (it’s done) in a hilarious and inventive way, you’re disarmed and your defences are low so (it) gets you.”
