Water rorts

Last Monday the ABC’s Four Corners program aired Cash Splash, which illustrated how past and current actions are prolonging the problems faced by the Murray-Darling Basin.

Billions of dollars have been spent on infrastructure schemes that have failed to deliver any measurable improvement in water flows or for the state of the environment.

Among those have studied the problems of the Murray-Darling Basin are researchers at the Australia Institute. Through a series of reports, they have been tracking the problem over recent years.

To dig through the detail of the promised goals, actual outcomes and how these have been distorted by factors such as political influence and the role of large agri-business, Barometer’s Des Lawrence spoke to Rod Campbell, research director at the Australia Institute.
