Responses to Closing the Gap and CDP

Posted on: Fri 1 Mar 2019

In this week’s Anangu Lands Paper Tracker program, we talk about the 11th Closing the Gap Report which the Government released on Thursday 14th February 2019. The Closing the Gap policy is aimed at closing or at least narrowing the gap between First Nations and other Australians in areas such as life expectancy, education, health, housing, jobs and a number of other targets. Only two of the seven Closing the Gap targets are on track.

We’re also going to talk about a proposal that offers an alternative model to the existing Community Development Program (CDP) that has been developed through an alliance of organisations including the Northern and Central Land Councils, the Aboriginal Medical services Alliance of the NT (AMSANT) and the Aboriginal Peak Organisations Northern Territory (APONT). This alternative approach is called Fair Work and Strong Communities – Proposal for Remote Development and Employment Scheme

To find out more, we talk with John Paterson who is the Chief Executive Officer of Aboriginal Peak Organisations NT.

This program was made possible with support from the Community Broadcasting Foundation. Find out more at cbf.org.au
