Provenance – olive oil with its own thumbprint

Posted on: Thu 25 Oct 2018

Richard Gawel, Adelaide scientist and international olive oil judge, has established that extra virgin olive oil carries its own proof of provenance.

Working with colleagues in Queensland, Richard has shown that oil from the Fleurieu region of South Australia has distinctive characteristics reflecting where it comes from – its terroir, its provenance.

So, as with wine and DOP classifications, this means that growers and producers can further develop the credibility and cachet of their prime products.

Richard surveyed the research and its implications on Gastronaut.
