1885 – French microbiologist Louis Pasteur develops the first vaccine against rabies. Successfully immunises 9 year old Joseph Meister, who went on to become caretaker of the Pasteur Institute.

1984 – Czech-born, US professional tennis player Martina Navratilova defeats rival Chris Evert Lloyd to win her 4th consecutive Ladies’ Singles title at Wimbledon.

1957 – John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who formed the British pop group, The Beatles alongside Ringo Starr and George Harrison in 1960, meet for the first time at a church garden fete in Woolton, Liverpool.
