On This Day – 29 August
Posted on: Tue 29 Aug 2017
On this day in 1882, the Australian cricket team defeated England for the first time, which led to The Sporting Times publishing satirical obituary for English cricket that read:
“in affectionate remembrance of English Cricket which died at the oval on 29th August, 1882, deeply lamented by a large circle of sorry friends and acquaintances R.I.P. Note – the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”
This is where we get the name ‘the Ashes’ for the rivalry between England and Australia, which continues this year when England begin their Ashes defence on the 23rd of November this year at the GABBA.
