Struggle to secure rent reductions

Posted on: Fri 7 Aug 2020

At the start of 2020, Australian renters were already vulnerable to an economic shock. To make matters worse, coronavirus had a greater impact on industries like hospitality and service sectors where renters were more likely to work.

Many renters were helped by expanded income support, but according to a new report released this week, few were lucky enough to secure a rent reduction.

Better Renting is a community of renters working together for stable, affordable, and liveable homes. Their report Rent due: renting and stress during COVID-19 explores the experiences of renters in Australia over the past months.

Joel Dignam, Executive Director of Better Renting speaks with Breakfast’s Tom Mann and Zoe Kounadis about the findings.
