Featuring the music of Fred Smith

Posted on: Mon 25 Nov 2019

If ever a song exists that’s capable of helping us understand, at least in part,  the emotional roller-coaster of experiences of  our Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans, it’s surely Fred Smith’s Dust of Uruzgan.  Fred is an Australian singer/songwriter and Diplomat.  In July 2009 he was the first DFAT civilian to be posted to Uruzgan, serving most of his 18-month tour of the province living and working on the Multinational Base in Tarin Kowt, and at a Forward Operating Base in the Chora Valley.  Fred Also served in Bouginville and The Solomon Islands. We draw on  his music today to get a feel for the issues our Veterans face when serving Australia.  Today we also replay part of Fred Smith’s interview from 2018 with Service Voices’ Nicky Page.
