The summit of Mount Everest was reached for the first time, by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

U.S. President Ronald Reagan began his first visit to the Soviet Union in 1988, when he arrived in Moscow for a superpower summit with the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

On this day in music in 1967, Oasis front-man Noel Gallagher was born and he went on to be a spearhead of the Brit-pop movement.
