Abortion law reform Bill introduced to SA parliament

Posted on: Thu 13 Dec 2018

The Statutes Amendment (Abortion Law Reform) Bill has been introduced to the South Australian Parliament by Greens member Tammy Franks MLC.

The current abortion law has not been updated since 1969, and while South Australia has public sector abortion services, abortion remains in criminal law.

Dr Catherine Kevin, is a Senior Lecturer at Flinders University in History, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and a member of the South Australian Abortion Action Coalition.

She speaks to Small Change‘s Lisa Burns about the unnecessary restrictions women face under current abortion law, the presence of stigma in the medical profession and the education that needs to occur to address this, and the behind the scenes work the coalition has been doing to keep abortion on the political agenda.
