Trevor Powell: HMAS Hobart

Posted on: Mon 26 Nov 2018

Shipping enthusiast and ship photographer Trevor Powell tells us a bit about the history of HMAS Hobart, the only one of Australia’s Modified Leander Class cruisers to survive WW2.   It’s ironic that after distinguished service during the war, including being present at the Japanese surrender in 1945, Hobart was to eventually be sold in 1962 to the Japanese firm of Mitsui & Co (Aust) Pty Ltd for breaking up.   She left Sydney under tow on 3 March 1962 and arrived back in Japan on 2 April 1962.
