Frances Bedford MP on increasing Newstart

Posted on: Fri 25 May 2018

In this week’s Anangu Lands Paper Tracker radio program, we talk about the Newstart allowance, which is the main income support payment that people can get if they’re unemployed or looking for work.

Newstart payments are about $273 a week and are less than 18 per cent of the average wage, less than 41 per cent of the minimum wage and at least $160 below the poverty line.

To find out more, we talk with Frances Bedford who is the Independent State MP for Florey in Adelaide’s north-east and who sits in the South Australian Parliament. Amongst her other busy activities, she has been campaigning to increase Newstart.

For information: The Anti-Poverty Network’s campaign launch for “It’s time to raise Newstart” will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday 30th June 2018 at ‘The Jade’, 142–160 Flinders Street, Adelaide. For more information visit antipovertynetwork.sa@gmail.com or phone 0411 587 663.
