On this day in 1905, unarmed protesters in St Petersburg, Russia, were fired upon by soldiers of the Imperial Guard as they marched towards the Winter Palace where they planned to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.

Also, on this day in 1992, Dr Roberta Bondar became the first Canadian woman in space and the first neurologist in space.

On this day in 1968, Aretha Franklin released Lady Soul, her 14th studio album which became Billboard Album of the Year 1968.
