On this day in 1877, the beloved Australian author and illustrator, May Gibbs, was born. She is best known for her classic book Gumnut Babies which depicts Australian bush faires.

Also, on this day in 2017, US president Barack Obama commuted Wikileaks discloser, Chelsea Mannings, prison sentence from 35 years to 7 years.

On this day, in 1882, the first Dutch female physician, Aletta Jacobs, opened her first doctor’s office. Jabob’s was also the first Dutch woman to receive a university degree.
