What It’s Like to be Homeless over Christmas

Posted on: Mon 18 Dec 2017

For some Australians, the biggest concerns they face over Christmas are gift shopping and food preparation but over 100,000 Australians will find themselves homeless this Christmas, including a high percentage of young people and women.

According to Big Issue deputy editor, Katherine Smyrk, it’s largely a result of a shortage of resources and housing.

‘Really it comes down to housing affordability. There aren’t enough places for young people to go to for crisis accommodation’, says Katherine.

Katherine speaks with Tom Mann about the realities faced by homeless people over Christmas and how others can help.
