On this day in 1875 the first ever newspaper cartoon strip was published in the New York Daily Graphics. The cartoon consisted of 17 images and covered a entire page.

In 1951, Florence Chadwick completed the English Channel in 16 hours and 55 minutes, becoming the first women to complete the swim. She went on to swim the channel another 3 times, smashing records set by men.

Finally, on this day in 1962, original Beatles drummer, Pete Best, was fired from the band and replaced by Ringo Starr.
