Port Adelaide Enfield supports Newstart raise

Posted on: Mon 28 Aug 2017

The Port Adelaide Enfield Council has made history and become the first council in Australia to publicly advocate raising the Newstart Allowance.

More than 5000 Port Adelaide Enfield residents are unemployed, putting the unemployment rate well above the state average at 8.6%.

The Council’s decision comes after weeks of lobbying from Anti-Poverty Network SA, local residents and welfare recipients.

Heather Eckermann is a casual worker and Newstart recipient, and gave a personal deputation to the Council.

She joined Small Change’s Lisa Burns for a chat and shared her experiences of living on Newstart.
