Yarra Council’s Controversial Decisions to Scrap January 26 Celebrations

Posted on: Thu 17 Aug 2017

The City of Yarra in Melbourne’s inner-north east has passed a vote to cancel Australia Day celebrations and citizenship ceremonies, but it has been met with backlash.

The Federal Government has since stripped the council of its citizenship ceremony powers.

Mayor of Yarra, Amanda Stone, says that the Federal Government’s actions are ‘unnecessary and a bit of an overreaction.’

She joined Jennie Lenman to talk about the decision and the reactions of the public.
