Republic debate back in limelight

Posted on: Wed 2 Aug 2017

Bill Shorten has brought the Republic debate back into the limelight by promising to hold a referendum if Labour is successful in the next election.

“If you look at our system of Government and the way our society holds together…we can honestly say we can do better than that,” says Michael Cooney, the National Director of the Australian Republic Movement.

Cooney said the referendum shouldn’t just be a liberal or labour project, rather, “it’s got to be an Australian project.”

Michael Cooney, the National Director of the Australian Republic Movement joins Breakfast’s Ian Newton to discuss.
