On this day in 1981, MTV was first broadcast to American audiences. The channel launched with footage of the Apollo 11, complete with the words: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll’.

Also on this day, the first Scout camp opened on Brownsea Island in Southern England. The Scouts began as a once-off event created by a former British Army officer, Robert Baden-Powell.

Breakfast producer Tom Rohde joined Ian Newton to discuss this day in history.
