Become a Supporter During Radiothon!
Posted on: Sun 30 Jul 2017
To keep Radio Adelaide on-air, we need listeners to become financial supporters!
We rely on the support of listeners to make over 120 hours of local content every week, celebrating local arts and music, producing independent news and current affairs, and providing a voice for our diverse community.
As a newly independent station, we need listeners’ support more than ever. We need to raise around $150,000 to make ends meet and secure our future. If you enjoy listening to Radio Adelaide, please become a supporter for $75 per year or $40 concession. You can also pay by monthly instalment if you become a supporter online.
Everyone who becomes a supporter before Sunday 13 August will go in the draw to win great prizes. Thanks to our very generous sponsors, we’ve got nearly $5,000 worth of prizes to give away. There are daily prizes valued at $100 or more. Plus two weekly prizes:
- a Pullman PV900 vacuum cleaner (value $349) from Servicing SA Cleaning Services
- a mixed dozen wines (value $308) from Small Change Wines
There are three major prizes:
- guided gin-tasting for ten (value $350) at The Howling Owl plus an item to the value of $200 from Urban Cow Studio
- a Golden Ticket from The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, including $400 to spend on tickets at The Gov’s award-winning live music venue and $200 to spend in the restaurant
- one of two season family passes (each valued at $320) to see every Windmill Theatre Company production in 2017 and 18
And then there’s the big one
- the Adelaide Comedy Gold Pass (value $1100), including a double pass to every Friday-night Adelaide Comedy event at Rhino Room until January, plus a complimentary bucket of beer.
Australia’s first community radio station is now more reliant on financial support than ever before to produce more than 120 hours of original content each week.
“The reality is that the South Australian media landscape has never been tougher,” says general manager Rob Popplestone. “As a station, we have a small team of staff and 200 volunteers who pride themselves on creating independent, local programming for our community. There is a very real and significant cost associated with producing more than 80 programs each and every week, including transmission, electricity, rent and equipment.”

Since becoming independent from the University of Adelaide in 2016, Radio Adelaide has continued its commitment to independent local current affairs, to championing local arts and music, and to providing access to the many diverse voices of Adelaide.
Station manager Chris Leese says, “Our coverage of the arts is all year round and we do more coverage of the Adelaide Fringe each year than anyone else. Our support for local and Australian music is significant, too. Every week, across the station we play on average 60 per cent Australian music and 20 per cent South Australian music.

“This year we have also launched exciting new programming about entrepreneurship and mental health, along with a brand new sports format.”
Radio Adelaide’s award-winning training program continues to mentor and provide opportunities for aspiring journalists and new radio talent – including Breakfast host Jennie Lenman, who has become one of the station’s leading personalities.
“Radio Adelaide has provided me with an opportunity to do what I love and develop skills for live radio,” Jennie says. “On Breakfast I’m able to speak to thousands of South Australians and bring awareness to independent news and issues that may never be covered by commercial media.”
