Shaolin Afronauts Bringing Jazz and Afro-funk to The Gov

Posted on: Wed 26 Jul 2017

18-piece band, Shaolin Afronauts are presenting their original works in their entirety with new works in the mix at The Gov for Winter City Sounds.

They combine soul, jazz, afro-funk and Cuban rhythms to create a dynamic stage presence and unconventional sound.

“My role is probably the most improvisational in the band in that I have a lot of freedom in the rhythm section to play around with the rhythm and the flow of the music which comes a lot from the African master drummer tradition,” drummer from Shaolin Afronauts, Kevin Van Der Swaag said.

He joined Jennie Lenman in the studio.

You can catch them at The Gov on July 27, 2017 as part of Winter City Sounds.

Produced by Jennie Lenman and Kvitka Becker.
