The Value of Art

Posted on: Fri 7 Jul 2017

Chief Executive of the History Trust of South Australia, Greg Mackie joined Jennie Lenman in the studio to talk about the ever changing face of art and status as it’s own industry.

Greg challenged the emphasis on art’s economic value and how it has displaced the cultural value and significance of it’s creative vision.  Greg commented that,”the arts sector exists to promote art and the value of the arts…In the march to tick the boxes to get grants, we have exceeded the tolerances for arts to become economically valuable”.

Greg also discussed his upcoming lecture, Finding The Next Wave: Innovation and its Discontents and how he will emphasise the importance of artistic integrity over capital gain.
