Youth Economic Prospects – Avo Not to Blame

Posted on: Tue 4 Jul 2017

Danielle Wood from the Grattan Institute speaks with Jennie Lenman about the economic difficulties facing youth today and examples of young people fighting back, particularly in the UK.

Some commentators, like Bernard Salt, have argued young people have themselves to blame for their poor economic prospects as they splash out too much on smashed avocado breakfasts. However Danielle says there’s more factors at play,

“There’s definitely been a shift in the types of things that people consume. Younger people do spend more on going out than previous generations. They also spend more on education and housing. But spending on goods is actually lower and what we know is that young people are actually saving more than people did ten years ago.”
