Oakden Review reveals culture of abuse and cover-up

Posted on: Tue 2 May 2017

In December of last year, South Australia’s Chief Psychiatrist was contacted and concerns were raised about the level of clinical care provided at Oakden Older Persons Mental Health Service.

A review of the facility was undertaken and a report was created based on interviews with staff, written submissions, on-site observations by the review team and reviews of clinical files, policies, procedures and protocols.

The report has been released and the State Government has announced Oakden will be closed. It says current residents and their families will be consulted on future placements.

Health Consumers Alliance of SA Chief Executive, Michael Cousins, joined us live in the studio to discuss the findings of the review, its recommendations and his thoughts on what has happened.
