Recently in Darwin, traditional owners and their supporters met together for the National Native Title Conference.
One of the keynote speakers was Professor Gerald Taiaiake Alfred. He explored the important idea of Indigenous Resurgence, a powerful philosophy which is becoming a political movement in Canada and elsewhere.
He spoke to Aboriginal Message after his address and explained the concept, as well as offering some insights into how the Canadian experience reflects on Australia’s current debate over constitutional change and reconciliation.
He began by introducing himself in his native language of the Mohawk people.
